What is hypnosis, and how does hypnotherapy work?

  • Hypnosis is a natural state of deep relaxation, heightened focus, and increased suggestibility—where the mind becomes open to positive and intentional thought.
  • Hypnotherapy is a highly effective form of psychotherapy that promotes positive transformation in behaviors, attitudes, emotions, thoughts, and even physical conditions. It works by gently bypassing the conscious mind, which tends to be analytical and judgmental, allowing direct communication with the subconscious mind—the place where true and lasting change occurs.

Will I do or say things I don’t want to during hypnotherapy?

  • Hypnosis cannot make you do anything that goes against your morals, ethics, values, or beliefs. During a hypnotherapy session, you remain fully awake, aware, and in control—you can talk, think clearly, and even move if needed.
  • All hypnosis is, in essence, self-hypnosis. The therapist simply serves as a guide, helping you enter a deeply relaxed state where you can access your subconscious mind. This is the part of you that holds the patterns, emotions, and memories influencing your behavior.   • Your hypnotherapy session with me is designed to be a safe, supportive, and deeply relaxing experience. We’ll begin with a short conversation to discuss your goals, concerns, and what you hope to achieve through hypnosis. This allows me to tailor the session specifically to your needs.
  • Once you’re comfortable, I’ll gently guide you into a state of focused relaxation—a natural, peaceful trance where your mind becomes calm, clear, and open to positive suggestion. You’ll remain fully aware and in control throughout the process, simply feeling deeply relaxed, as if in a daydream or meditative state.

The science behind hypnosis…

Most people navigate about 90% of their day through habits, using them as a way to cope with everyday problems and stresses. Their responses—their words, thoughts, and actions—are largely automatic. What may seem like a human “weakness” is also a remarkable strength: when habitual patterns are empowering and effective, they serve us well. But when they are not, challenges arise, and external guidance may be needed.

Habits, or ingrained patterns of response, are activities of the subconscious mind developed over a lifetime. They form not only through direct personal experiences but also through influences absorbed from parents, teachers, friends, social media, and television. Once a pattern is internalized, it is often “forgotten,” yet it remains deeply embedded in the subconscious, quietly shaping our behaviors without our conscious awareness.

The subconscious mind is the feeling mind. By changing our feelings, we change our behavior. Transforming the way we feel about something reshapes the subconscious structures that govern our actions, opening the door to lasting change.

So how does this happen? The answer lies in neuroplasticity. The human brain is incredibly adaptive, with a remarkable capacity for learning, growth, and change. Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to form new neural pathways and reorganize existing ones in response to experiences. With an estimated 100 billion neurons, our brains can continually create and reshape connections, supporting learning, memory, and adaptation throughout life. While visualization—seeing images—may be part of the process, it is not necessary, as each person perceives imagery in their own way. During an imagery experience, clients are encouraged to notice whatever arises through their senses, emotional responses, or inner sensations. This creates a fuller and more meaningful experience than visualization alone, and it unfolds according to each client’s unique receptivity.

When a client engages in an imagery process, they are in a state of hypnosis. It may appear lighter if the client speaks during the process, though this can vary. Some people respond best to guided, spoken imagery, while others connect more deeply with silent imagery. These differences often reflect personal preference, levels of receptivity, or what is going on in the client’s life at the moment.

Although there are many styles and approaches to imagery, most methods ultimately guide the client inward to discover their own answers. Even guided imagery that includes archetypal themes creates space for the client’s personal subconscious symbols to surface.

Because each person carries their own symbolic language shaped by life experiences, understanding and recognizing these symbols is an essential aspect of effective hypnosis. Imagery serves as an exceptional tool for this discovery, allowing subconscious material to rise into conscious awareness. These unique symbols often play a significant role in supporting therapeutic growth and positive change.
